Monte Carlo features
Monte Carlo appears in my lists of the best data observability, data profiling, data lineage and data testing tools. It supports 55 of the 62 tracked data quality features.
Monte Carlo data testing
Monte Carlo runs validation monitors on SQL tables for nulls, uniqueness, ranges and formats, compares metrics between sources, and checks unstructured text with LLMs. You can inspect the rows that fail.
Compare: data testing tools
SQL Table Tests: Validation Monitors provide pre-built templates for null checks (completeness), uniqueness, value ranges (accuracy), and format validation (validity), plus custom SQL expressions; no dedicated referential integrity template (docs).
Unstructured Data Tests: Metric monitors support LLM-powered transformations for unstructured text, enabling sentiment analysis, classification, and custom evaluations on Snowflake, Databricks, and BigQuery (docs).
Table Comparison Tests: Comparison Monitors compare metrics between two data sources to detect deltas across custom or built-in metrics (docs).
Inspect Failed Rows: Validation and custom SQL monitors display invalid rows in alerts; custom SQL monitors show up to 5,000 failing rows for investigation (docs).
DataFrame Tests: Monte Carlo is a SaaS observability platform that connects to datastores; no Python DataFrame (Pandas/Spark) testing library is provided (docs).
Data Diff: Comparison Monitors compare field-level metrics (aggregates) between two data sources โ not individual rows โ so they function as Table Comparison Tests rather than true data diff (docs).
Data Contracts: No machine-readable data contract feature (producer-consumer schema and quality SLA agreements) found in documentation (docs).
Monte Carlo data observability
ML monitors learn freshness, volume and schema patterns, and you define monitors in the UI or as code in YAML. It also monitors pipeline jobs.
Compare: data observability tools ยท data profiling tools
Data Profiling: Monte Carlo automatically collects metadata and statistics for profiling including field usage, query logs, and table metrics (docs).
Anomaly Detection: ML-based automated anomaly detection on freshness, volume, schema, and field metrics using a rolling 6-week lookback period (docs).
Freshness Monitors: Freshness monitors detect when table updates fall outside expected cadence patterns using ML or manual threshold configuration (docs).
Volume Monitors: Volume monitors detect anomalous row count or byte count changes, with ML-based and manual threshold options (docs).
Schema Monitors: Schema Change monitors automatically detect added/removed columns or type changes using ML-based detection (docs).
Field Monitors: Metric Monitors track field-level statistics including null percentage, uniqueness, and custom metrics per column (docs).
Distribution Monitors: Metric Monitors include distribution analysis as one of dozens of available built-in metrics for field-level monitoring (docs).
Segment Monitors: Metric Monitors support segmentation by up to 5 fields or SQL expressions, tracking up to 10,000 metric/field/segment combinations (docs).
Custom SQL Monitors: Custom SQL monitors let users write arbitrary SQL tests with ML or manual thresholds, showing up to 5,000 failed rows for investigation (docs).
Window-Based Monitors: Metric Monitors support time-window grouping by hour, day, week, or month with options to exclude incomplete recent buckets (docs).
UI-Based Monitors: Full web UI for creating, configuring, and managing all monitor types, alerts, and incident workflows (docs).
Monitors-as-Code: YAML-based monitors-as-code with CI/CD support, dry-run mode, namespace isolation, and dbt schema.yml integration (docs).
Pipeline Monitoring: Circuit Breakers integrate with Airflow and dbt to monitor pipeline execution and halt downstream jobs when data quality issues are detected; pipeline health status is surfaced alongside data monitors (docs).
Partition-Based Monitors: No dedicated partition-based monitoring found; monitors can use WHERE filters but explicit partition-aware monitoring is not documented (docs).
Monte Carlo incident management
Monte Carlo has a full incident workflow: alerts, triage, feedback on alerts, resolution and ticketing.
Alert Notifications: Supports Slack, Microsoft Teams, PagerDuty, Opsgenie, Jira, ServiceNow, Webex, Google Chat, Datadog, FireHydrant, Incident.io, and Webhooks (docs).
Incident Triage: Alerts can be assigned owners, severity levels, and statuses; bulk update support and activity log track all triage actions (docs).
Alert Feedback: Threshold tuning allows adjusting detection sensitivity in response to false positives, providing feedback to the ML models (docs).
Incident Resolution: Incidents can be resolved through status management; troubleshooting agent provides AI-powered root cause analysis (docs).
Ticketing Integrations: Native integrations with Jira, ServiceNow, and Azure DevOps Work Items for ticket creation from incidents (docs).
On-Call Integrations: Integrations with PagerDuty and Opsgenie for on-call alerting when data quality incidents occur (docs).
Monte Carlo data quality analytics
Monte Carlo's dashboards, health scores and resolution metrics track data quality over time.
Data Quality Dashboards: Data Quality Dashboard, Table Health Dashboard, Data Operations Dashboard, Activity Dashboard, and custom SQL notebook dashboards (docs).
Data Health Scores: Table Health Dashboard tracks health status of tables; SLO tracking provides service level objective monitoring across assets (docs).
Incident Resolution Metrics: Monte Carlo's Data Reliability Dashboard explicitly measures time to detection and time to resolution of data incidents plus user engagement with incidents, aimed at improving incident-response operations (website).
Monte Carlo data lineage
Monte Carlo maps lineage at table and column level, end to end to BI dashboards, with impact analysis.
Compare: data lineage tools
Table-Level Lineage: Table-level lineage shows upstream and downstream table dependencies with multi-hop traversal (docs).
Column-Level Lineage: Field lineage tracks column-level dependencies including SELECT and non-SELECT (WHERE/JOIN) relationships across supported sources (docs).
End-to-End Lineage: Cross-system lineage spans data warehouses, BI tools (Looker, Tableau, Power BI), orchestration (Airflow, dbt), and code repositories (docs).
Impact Analysis: Incident alerts show downstream BI reports and users potentially affected; lineage traversal identifies downstream impact of data quality issues (docs).
Monte Carlo data governance
Monte Carlo syncs with data catalogs such as Alation, Atlan and Collibra.
Data Catalog: Built-in Assets catalog (formerly Catalog) provides a single pane of glass for all connected data assets with metadata, monitors, lineage, and alerts (docs).
Data Catalog Integration: Integrates with Alation, Atlan, Collibra, data.world, Secoda, and Select Star to push quality metadata to external catalogs (docs).
Data Products: The Data Products feature lets users group related tables/reports into a logical unit tied to a business use case, rolling up monitoring coverage and incident health at that level; Domains provide complementary org-level grouping (docs).
Data Classification: PII Filtering is listed as an Enterprise security feature on the pricing page, suggesting data classification capability, but docs were unavailable to confirm the auto-detection mechanism (pricing).
Monte Carlo FinOps
Monte Carlo tracks query performance and warehouse costs next to data quality, so the same team can spot expensive and slow queries.
Monte Carlo LLMOps
Monte Carlo monitors AI agents in production, next to the data they use.
AI Observability: Monte Carlo monitors AI agent pipelines, LLM call traces, and output quality metrics as first-class assets (docs).
Monte Carlo workflows
Monte Carlo works from code as well as the UI: a REST and GraphQL API, a Python SDK, webhooks, circuit breakers that stop pipelines when data fails a check, and a dbt integration.
Scheduling: Monitors can be scheduled on a cron-based schedule, triggered when tables update, or triggered by job completion (docs).
CI/CD Integrations: Circuit breakers actively block pipelines when quality thresholds are breached; monitors-as-code and the pycarlo SDK enable full CI/CD pipeline integration (docs).
Webhooks: Generic webhook notifications listed among supported alert channels for sending incident events to external systems (docs).
REST / GraphQL API: GraphQL API with full coverage of platform operations; pycarlo Python SDK wraps the API for programmatic access (docs).
MCP Server: MCP Server exposes tools for monitor management, asset discovery, lineage, alert management, and agent observability; supports Claude Code, Cursor, and VS Code (docs).
Python SDK: pycarlo Python SDK wraps the GraphQL API, enabling programmatic execution of all Monte Carlo queries and mutations (docs).
dbt Integration: Integrates with dbt Cloud and dbt Core to ingest manifest metadata, sync test failures as incidents, and show dbt lineage (docs).
Monte Carlo AI agents
Monte Carlo writes monitors from plain-language prompts, suggests monitors automatically, and uses AI agents to troubleshoot incidents. It also monitors AI agents in production and ships an MCP server.
Natural Language Test Generation: When creating a custom SQL monitor, users can click "Generate query with Monitoring Agent" and provide a written prompt, and the AI generates the corresponding SQL rule (docs).
Automated Test Generation: Automated monitors (freshness, volume, schema) are ML-generated without manual configuration; metric monitors auto-establish baselines (docs).
AI Issue Triaging: Troubleshooting Agent automatically analyzes hundreds of hypotheses and highlights the most likely root causes when alerts trigger (docs).
AI Chat Assistant: Monte Carlo has no in-product AI chat assistant; the Agent Toolkit MCP server enables external AI coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor) to interact with the platform, but this is not an in-product conversational feature (docs).
AI Issue Resolution: Troubleshooting Agent provides root cause analysis and investigation but does not autonomously remediate data issues (docs).
