    Platform-Native Data Quality Tools

Data quality features built into your data platform or transformation tool, with data tests and data monitors that run where your data already lives.

    dbt tests

Testing built into open-source dbt Core: generic and custom SQL data tests run with dbt test, unit tests check model logic on fixed inputs, and model contracts enforce column types and constraints at build time, extended by packages such as dbt_utils, dbt-expectations, and audit_helper.

    OSStestingdbt-native
    My Opinion

Best for every dbt team as the first layer: rules you know, written next to the models and run in the same CI/CD, before adding observability for issues you did not anticipate.

    My Opinion

Best for large dbt teams that want dbt test and model failures turned into incidents next to warehouse monitors and lineage.

    Acceldata

Autonomous data and AI platform that polls the dbt Cloud API every 30 minutes by default, turning job runs and their artifacts into pipeline runs with model, test, and lineage details.

    My Opinion

Best for dbt Cloud teams that want job runs tracked as pipeline runs, with model and test details, in a wider data reliability platform.

    Qualytics

Data quality control layer that reads dbt manifest.json through the Qualytics CLI and creates or updates Qualytics checks from your dbt tests, keyed by each test's unique_id.

    My Opinion

Best for teams that want dbt tests imported as Qualytics checks, so they run and alert next to inferred checks.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose a data quality tool for dbt?
Think in five layers and add them as you need them. First, dbt's own data tests, unit tests, and model contracts. Second, dbt packages that add tests: dbt_utils, dbt-expectations, audit_helper, and Elementary. Third, a separate validation step with Great Expectations or Soda when you also test data outside dbt. Fourth, data observability for issues you did not write a test for: Elementary inside the dbt project, or Monte Carlo, Metaplane, Sifflet, Bigeye, or Validio across the warehouse. Fifth, data diffs on pull requests with Recce, Datafold, or reladiff. Small teams usually stop at the first two layers plus Elementary. Read more on my data quality tool market guide.
What data quality tests does dbt have built in?
dbt Core ships three kinds of checks. Data tests run as SQL with dbt test: the generic tests unique, not_null, accepted_values, and relationships, plus any custom SQL test. Unit tests check a model's logic on fixed input rows before it touches real data. Model contracts enforce column names, data types, and constraints when the model builds. All three live next to your models and run in the same CI/CD.
Which dbt packages add data quality tests?
dbt_utils, from dbt Labs, adds generic tests such as expression_is_true, equal_rowcount, and unique_combination_of_columns. dbt-expectations ports Great Expectations-style tests, such as value ranges, regex patterns, and row counts, into dbt tests. audit_helper, from dbt Labs, compares two relations or queries row by row, which helps when you refactor or migrate a model. Elementary adds anomaly detection tests for volume, freshness, schema changes, and column metrics, plus an observability report. All are free and install through packages.yml.
Should I use Great Expectations or Soda with dbt?
Use them when data quality checks need to run outside dbt too, for example on files, DataFrames, or sources dbt does not build. Great Expectations runs checkpoints on the tables dbt builds as a separate pipeline step, and dbt-expectations brings its style of tests into dbt itself. Soda Core runs YAML checks and data contracts in pipelines and CI/CD, and Soda Cloud imports dbt test results so they alert next to Soda checks. If all your data is built by dbt, dbt tests and packages usually cover the same rules with less setup.
Which data observability tool is best for dbt?
Elementary, if dbt is the center of your stack: Elementary OSS is a free dbt package that adds anomaly detection tests and an observability report, and Elementary Cloud adds managed monitors, column-level lineage, incident management, and AI triage. Metaplane is the fastest to set up from a UI and reads dbt Cloud runs and lineage. Monte Carlo, Sifflet, Bigeye, and Validio import dbt models, tests, and lineage and fit larger teams that monitor more than dbt. Add observability when issues you did not write a test for, such as late loads, volume drops, or distribution shifts, start reaching dashboards.
How do I test dbt changes before merging a pull request?
Use a data diff in CI. Recce compares the data your pull request builds with production and shows schema diffs, row-level diffs, and downstream impact for reviewers, with an open-source core. Datafold runs data diffs only for the models a pull request changes, though its classic app is closed to new customers. reladiff, a community fork of Datafold's archived open-source data-diff, compares tables within or across databases from the command line, and dbt's audit_helper package compares two versions of a model in SQL. dbt unit tests check transformation logic on fixed inputs, while data diffs check the effect on real data, so teams often use both.
