Google Cloud Knowledge Catalog review
Google Cloud Knowledge Catalog is the best tool for data governance and engineering teams on Google Cloud that want natural-language search over their metadata instead of building custom discovery UIs on top of BigQuery and Cloud Storage.
Strengths
- Public, usage-based pricing with a free tier.
- The only platform catalog that imports dbt MetricFlow semantics.
- Data products and data quality built in.
Caveats
- Governs Google Cloud first.
- Legacy Data Catalog customers must migrate (shutdown started June 2026).
When to look elsewhere
Use Knowledge Catalog if your data is on Google Cloud. Add a cross-platform catalog when you need governance beyond it.
Fun facts
Google renamed Dataplex to Knowledge Catalog on April 10, 2026.
Knowledge Catalog's dbt MetricFlow import went GA in September 2026.
Google's legacy Data Catalog started shutting down on June 1, 2026.
Google Cloud Knowledge Catalog pricing
Knowledge Catalog bills by usage: $0.06 per DCU-hour for discovery, $0.089 for lineage, data quality and profiling, and $2 per GiB-month of metadata storage, with 100 free DCU-hours a month.
