    data.world review

Data.World by ServiceNow is the best data catalog tool for governance professionals and data analysts at enterprises looking for a knowledge-graph-driven catalog that delivers high-accuracy AI-ready context and self-service data discovery.

    — Ari Bajo, Founder of toolsfordata.com

    Strengths

    • A knowledge-graph model that's more flexible than most catalogs' fixed schemas.
    • Governance workflows tied to ServiceNow, with write-back to Snowflake and Databricks.
    • AI-ready: the Archie assistant and a hosted MCP server with write tools.

    Caveats

    • Now sold through ServiceNow, and ServiceNow-provisioned instances are US-hosted only.
    • No public pricing, and key features are paid add-ons.
    • Many newer features are still in preview, and releases slowed in 2026.

    When to look elsewhere

Choose data.world if you already run ServiceNow and want the catalog tied to its workflows and AI agents. Otherwise, consider Atlan or Collibra for a vendor-neutral enterprise catalog.

    Fun facts

ServiceNow closed the data.world acquisition in July 2025.

data.world shut down its public Open Data Community on July 11, 2026.

Its hosted MCP server went live on June 18, 2026.

    data.world pricing

data.world doesn't publish prices; its pricing page was removed. Governance Premium and Sensitive Data Classification are paid add-ons.

    data.world features

data.world appears in my lists of the best data catalog, data lineage, data marketplace and data stewardship tools. It supports 52 of the 87 tracked data governance features.

    data.world data catalog

data.world models metadata as a knowledge graph (RDF and SPARQL), with custom resource types and relationships, a glossary, and completeness and freshness checks.

    Compare: data catalog tools

    • Data Catalog: Data catalog with enterprise-grade knowledge graph, search, lineage, governance, and zero-copy connectors to major cloud warehouses (docs).

    • Automated Metadata Harvesting: Zero-copy connectors to Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift, and BigQuery automatically harvest metadata without data movement (docs).

    • Search & Discovery: Google-like federated search across all catalog assets with AI-enhanced relevance and natural language querying (docs).

    • AI-Powered Search: AI-powered natural language search enables query-by-question discovery across the enterprise catalog (docs).

    • Usage & Popularity Statistics: Popularity Analytics ranks trending resources from org metrics, and search cards show usage (docs).

    • Custom Fields & Templates: The Catalog Toolkit adds custom metadata fields, resource types, sections and relationships (docs).

    • Asset Certification: Configurable approval statuses (e.g., Approved, In review, Rejected) mark whether a resource is ready for use (docs).

    • Catalog Usage Analytics: Governance dashboards cover engagement, search, resources and users (docs).

    • Business Glossary: Business glossary with term management and catalog asset linkage, stewardship workflows for owner accountability and change management, and knowledge-graph-native semantic links between terms — related concepts, hierarchies, and cross-domain relationships (docs).

    • Metadata Propagation: The Inherited Value automation fills empty fields from the parent resource through "Is Part of" relations (docs).

    data.world data lineage

data.world shows table, column and end-to-end lineage with impact analysis.

    Compare: data lineage tools

    • Data Lineage: Automated lineage tracking across pipelines with policy enforcement and impact analysis confirmed (docs).

    • Table-Level Lineage: Dataset-level lineage automatically built across connected sources (docs).

    • Impact Analysis: Impact analysis confirmed — identifies downstream effects of upstream data changes (docs).

    • OpenLineage Support: The Marquez collector (public preview) harvests OpenLineage datasets, jobs and runs as lineage; no native OpenLineage endpoint (docs).

    data.world data stewardship

Access requests route to ServiceNow for approval, with suggest-and-approve changes and description write-back to Snowflake and Databricks.

    Compare: data stewardship tools

    • Data Stewardship: Stewardship workflows for ownership assignment and governance task management confirmed (docs).

    • Review & Approval Workflows: Suggested changes to business terms and catalog resources go to authorized approvers by email and in-app task, and the requester is notified of the decision; a premium automation can open ServiceNow tickets (docs).

    • Metadata Automation: Smart governance workflows that trigger automatically based on metadata events confirmed (docs).

    • Critical Data Elements: No CDE registry found in the docs; custom fields could model it (docs).

    • Governance Scorecards: No questionnaire-based maturity scoring; only metadata-completeness tasks (docs).

    data.world data classification

    • Sensitive Data Discovery: ML-based Sensitive Data Classification (PII, PHI, PCI) runs through the collector (public preview, paid add-on) (docs).

    • Data Policy: Keep true but re-source: the cited automations are metadata workflows, while real row-level access control exists only for virtualized tables (private preview, private installs only) (docs).

    • Native Policy Enforcement: Writeback to Snowflake and Databricks pushes descriptions and metadata, not access or masking policies (docs).

    • Data Masking: No masking; Snowflake masking policies are only cataloged as metadata entities (docs).

    data.world AI features

The Archie assistant answers questions in the catalog and in Slack, writes descriptions in bulk, and a hosted MCP server with write tools went live in June 2026.
